Splashbacks are an increasingly popular piece in many kitchens and with good reason. They are both practical and stylish and are a wonderful accent to any stove top. They provide excellent cover for splashes and spills but how well do they stand up to pressure? This article will examine whether glass splashbacks crack.
Glass splashbacks can crack under the pressure of intense heat but this typically only happens when the incorrect glass is used. At Instrument Glasses we only create splashbacks using toughened glass. Good quality toughened glass is both heat resistant and safe. Acrylic splashbacks however, are much less heat resistant and can take serious damage from a rear stove top burner.
Why Do Glass Splashbacks Crack?
The most common reason why your glass splashback may crack is the quality. Splashbacks that are fitted behind the hob need to be created with toughened glass. Toughened glass can withstand up to 400 ºC or several times the heat that non toughened glass can handle.
The other issue that can cause a glass splashback to crack is the proximity to an open gas flame. The repeated cycles of heating and cooling can eventually cause the glass to crack and force you to get a replacement. A good rule of thumb is to ensure that your glass splashback is at least 100mm away from the flames of your hob.
Can You Crack A Glass Splashback When Cleaning?
Cleaning will not cause your splashback to crack but it’s still important to be careful. Avoid using abrasive cleaners like brushes with hard bristles or wire wool, these rough materials can damage the finish of your glass splashback and take away from it’s natural, glossy look. Instead, use a glass cleaner and a damp cloth.
Can You Fix A Cracked Glass Splashback?
Trying to repair a cracked glass splashback is very difficult and generally not recommended. Instead, you're better off buying a replacement. This is why its crucial that you buy a good quality, toughened glass splashback to begin with, don’t get temped by those cheaper quotes!
Summary
While it is technically possible for glass splashbacks to crack, it’s a scenario you can completely avoid as long as you follow the best practices. Always go for toughened glass as it’s both heat resistant and very safe. Also, remember to install it at least 100mm away from your hob. As long as you follow this guidance, your glass splashback will stand the test of time and be a wonderful asset to your kitchen.
