How to Protect Glass Features During a Summer Heatwave

When temperatures rise, most homeowners focus on keeping rooms cool, protecting plants, and staying comfortable. However, periods of intense heat can also place additional stress on glass features around the home.


Windows, roof panels, balustrades, glass doors, splashbacks, conservatories, and outdoor glass installations are designed to be durable. Even so, prolonged heat, direct sunlight, and sudden temperature changes can increase the risk of damage, particularly where glass is already chipped, poorly installed, or unsuitable for the application.


Taking a few simple precautions can help protect your glass during a summer heatwave and keep it looking its best.


Can Hot Weather Damage Glass?

Glass can cope with high temperatures, but problems may occur when different parts of the same pane heat or cool at different rates.


This is known as thermal stress. For example, one section of a window may be exposed to strong sunlight while another remains shaded by a curtain, frame, sticker, or nearby object. The hotter area expands slightly, while the cooler area expands less. If the difference becomes significant, it can place stress on the glass.


Sudden temperature changes may also increase the risk of cracking. Applying very cold water to glass that has been heated by direct sunlight is one example of an unnecessary temperature shock. The type, thickness, condition, and installation of the glass all affect how well it responds to hot weather.


Avoid Sudden Temperature Changes

One of the simplest ways to protect glass during a heatwave is to avoid exposing it to rapid changes in temperature.


Do not pour cold water over glass doors, roof panels, windows, or outdoor glass that has been sitting in direct sunlight. If cleaning is necessary, wait until the glass has cooled or clean it early in the morning or later in the evening.


The same principle applies indoors. Avoid placing extremely cold objects directly against glass surfaces that have become warm, and take care when using heat-producing appliances near glass that has not been designed for high-temperature environments. Gradual temperature changes are much less likely to place unnecessary strain on the material.


Use Blinds and Curtains Carefully

Blinds and curtains can help reduce glare and keep rooms cooler, but they should be used thoughtfully.


Heavy curtains or dark blinds positioned very close to the glass can trap heat between the fabric and the window. This may cause part of the pane to become significantly hotter than the surrounding areas.


Where possible, leave a small gap to allow air to circulate. External shading, such as awnings or shutters, can also help stop some heat before it reaches the glass.

Window coverings should not press directly against hot glass for long periods, particularly on south-facing windows that receive intense sunlight.


Remove Objects That Create Uneven Shading

Items placed close to windows can create small areas of shade while the rest of the glass remains exposed to direct sunlight.


Large furniture, boxes, signs, decorative films, stickers, posters, and window displays can all contribute to uneven heating. This is particularly relevant in shops, offices, conservatories, and rooms with large glazed panels.


Check that objects are not sitting directly against the glass and try to avoid covering only one small section of a pane during the hottest part of the day. Keeping the area around the glass clear also improves airflow and makes it easier to spot any signs of damage.


Inspect Glass for Chips and Cracks

Minor damage can become more serious when glass is exposed to heat and temperature changes.


Before or during hot weather, inspect windows, doors, balustrades, tabletops, and outdoor panels for visible chips, scratches, or cracks. Pay close attention to edges and corners, as damage in these areas can weaken the glass.


A small chip does not always mean the glass will fail, but it should not be ignored. Damaged glass may be more vulnerable to further cracking under stress.

Avoid touching, leaning on, or placing pressure near a damaged area. Contact a professional glass manufacturer or installer for advice if you notice anything concerning.


Clean Glass at Cooler Times of Day

Strong sunlight can cause cleaning products and water to dry too quickly, leaving streaks and marks behind. More importantly, using very cold water on hot glass can create an abrupt temperature difference.

Use a soft, non-abrasive cloth and a suitable glass cleaner. Avoid harsh tools that could scratch the surface, as scratches may affect both the appearance and long-term condition of the glass.


Outdoor glass balustrades and panels may collect more dust during dry weather, but there is no need to clean them during the hottest part of the day.


Take Care Around Glass Splashbacks

Bespoke glass splashbacks are normally manufactured from toughened safety glass, making them suitable for use behind hobs and in busy kitchens.


During a heatwave, kitchens can become warmer than usual, particularly when cooking. Make sure ventilation is working effectively and avoid placing portable cooking appliances too close to glass surfaces unless the area and glass were designed for that use.


Do not apply frozen packs or very cold cloths to a warm splashback in an attempt to cool it quickly. Allow the glass to return to room temperature naturally. A correctly manufactured and installed splashback should provide excellent durability, but following sensible care guidance will help protect its finish.


Check Outdoor Glass Features

Glass balustrades, garden panels, balcony screens, and glass tabletops may be exposed to direct sunlight for many hours.


Inspect fittings and surrounding materials as well as the glass itself. Metal fixings, frames, and seals can expand in hot weather, so it is important that glass installations have been designed with appropriate tolerances.


Avoid placing hot barbecues, fire pits, patio heaters, or other heat sources close to outdoor glass. Even toughened glass should not be exposed to uncontrolled or uneven heat unless the installation has been designed for it. Glass furniture should also be kept stable and supported correctly. Do not overload a tabletop or move it while the glass is extremely hot.


Choose the Right Glass for the Application

The best protection begins before installation. Different glass products are designed for different environments. Toughened safety glass is commonly used where extra strength, heat resistance, or safer breakage characteristics are needed. Laminated glass may be specified where security, safety, or glass retention is important.


Specialist coatings and glass types can also help manage solar heat, glare, light transmission, and UV exposure. Using standard glass in an unsuitable location may increase the risk of damage.
